An organization was formed a decade back in New Jersey to promote cultural activities especially in Bengali. The organization was named "DISHARI". What is the meaning of Dishari? In Bengali it means one who shows the path or the torchbearer. The main goal of this organization is to perform cultural activities especially in Bengali using local talent. Dishari has been in the past and will be in the future the platform where local talents have bloomed. Though primarily geared towards performance of cultural activities in Bengali since the majority of its members are from Bengal, it does not mean that Dishari is not receptive of cultural performances in other languages from other parts of India.
In fact the members of Dishari have started incorporating encouragement in participation relating to cultural performances from other Indian communities because Dishari wants to be the melting pot of cultural exchanges among all Indians. This approach by an organization to incorporate everybody who is Indian is first of its kind in USA. May be in future other organizations will follow in the footsteps of Dishari.................but the credit will belong to Dishari for showing the path and this will make the members of Dishari proud and satisfied that Dishari has been the torchbearer and has lived up to the true meaning of its name. | |
